Equality, Diversity and Inclusion – EDI
Jan 31, 2022
Since operating in the construction industry as a family run business with deep Indian culture and heritage in 2009 – the drive for an ethnically diverse company has been paramount to remain parallel with the growth of the industry itself.
The UK Equality act of 2010 identifies 9 protected characteristics:
Age, Disability, Gender, Gender Identity, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation and marriage and civil partnerships.
BAME employees make up 6% of the workforce and less than 15% of the UK construction industry are Women.
Currently the construction industry sector remains male-dominated across the globe, resulting in greater inclusion and diversity for many employers and industry bodies.
The culture of our business involves inclusion of every social background. We value integrity and skills of an individual to the upmost rather than their origination and background.
There has been a noticeable and necessary shift within the construction industry in recent years towards greater understanding and acceptance of the benefits that EDI play in the workplace and wider society.
Whilst there is a growing awareness and understanding from both a leadership and management level when it comes to EDI, this is not translating effectively into practice on-site as well as smaller companies on a big corporations supply chain.
A shift for a more diverse supply chain for main-contracting firms is paramount as companies are suffering due to lack of inclusion. We are seeing that many main contractors are bringing this issue to the forefront of their operations and many contractors are moving towards a diverse supply chain.
